More Than Just Bills “You’ve got mail!” That was the title of a popular movie back in 1998 and it was the introduction to email for many of us. My first computer was a massive one with orange print on a black screen. It was a hand-me down from my in-laws and it and I were inseparable. As time passed, the technology advanced and improved and so did the personal computers in our home. One of my favourite pastime, even in this age of electronic mail, is checking for letters
An Inside Job Is that an accurate question – that someone could make you happy? Often we hear that happiness is an inside job, which leads me to wonder whether my own question is nonsensical. Yesterday, out of the blue I called up my daughter and invited her out on a road trip. Immediately. Well after she dropped off the baby at daycare. That meant we had about eight hours to go be happy together. And we were as we drove and finally ended up at the lake. Very recently,
A House The mind is beautiful; frightening, heart wrenching and pure. It is a house and memories make it a home. Imagination stretches its wings and flies, but always returns home to the mind. The very core, the soul and fibre of our being is in it. A great many fascinations and visualizations dare to trouble the peace of the mind. On my mind are vivid, happy memories, pictures of my dog, to-do lists and Facebook passwords. Hopes, passions and dreams are born in it. Much like wood, it slowly
The Wonderful Sound “Have you ever heard the wonderful silence just before the dawn? Or the quiet and calm just as a storm ends? Or perhaps you know the silence when you haven’t the answer to a question you’ve been asked, or the hush of a country road at night, or the expectant pause of a room full of people when someone is just about to speak, or, most beautiful of all, the moment after the door closes and you’re alone in the whole house? Each one is different, you
Its Place In Your Life How do you feel about technology? There are some advances in technology that I am sure will pass me but we are not at that stage yet. When it comes to everyday technological advances, it would be fair to say that at my ripe “old age,” I am still keeping up with the millennials. We have come a long way when it comes to the use of technological advancement. Yet, many are cynical about it. “We can’t jump off bridges anymore because our iPhones will
They Are Everywhere Circles. What you see when you are having a migraine. They creep sneakily across the eyes; so close yet so far. They are beautiful, graceful and elegant. They are performed under the spotlight by sparkly ballerina shoes. The dancer spins in circles, disappearing into a whirl of colour and enchants the audience. Circles are complicated when a toddler tries to draw a face; they are magnificent when horses gallop in a circle, drawn by the rider’s reins. The lights in the disco are circles, small fluorescent ones.
What A Message Can Do A text message sent me into deep reflection this past Tuesday. Home, nursing a sore knee and contemplating my next move, I was chatting with my daughter on the phone when a Sistah-Friend sent me a message. That was not the one that caused me to think. My daughter and I continued talking while I checked out the link my Sistah-Friend sent. The multi-functions of smartphones cannot be praised enough. As I shared the information received in that text with my daughter, another one came
Everybody Carries One A handbag is a symbol of independence, style and comfort. Carrying a handbag is like carrying a piece of home with you, wherever you go. When I see handbags, I think of the city and its people. Handbags have broken the chains of gender, time and age. They have evolved to be an essential part of every wardrobe. Handbags come in all shapes, sizes and colours. They carry Columbia in their leather and China in their stitches. A Different Handbag By The Hour It’s 8 A.M. and
