The Internet in general and social media in particular have changed the way we connect, communicate and correspond. New language, words, acronyms and skills have developed and entered our lives. None has been more pervasive than “selfie!”
More and more people are having their 15-minutes of fame by going “viral” on one or all social media platforms. Many can trace their “fame” back to a selfie, taken in their bathroom (most often). Then you have those like the Houston Native, Irvin Randle, who seemingly out of the blue has become an “Internet Sensation.” Why? Not only is he really, really handsome for a gentleman of a certain age, his years of taking a selfie and posting them to Facebook finally got him noticed. Today, Mr. Steal Your Grandmother, as he is now called, is a Facebook-made celebrity who is giving interviews in mainstream media, hosting special event and turning heads everywhere he goes!
Selfie Takers Are Nutcases!
Recent reports suggest that persistent and consistent taking of selfies is narcissistic. Some say it is an mental disorder. You can read more about that perspective in this article but here is a snapshot (pun intended):
“…The American Psychiatric Association actually confirmed that taking selfies is a mental disorder, going as far as to term the condition “selfitis”. The APA has defines it as: “the obsessive compulsive desire to take photos of one’s self and post them on social media as a way to make up for the lack of self-esteem and to fill a gap in intimacy”, and has categorized it into three levels: borderline, acute, and chronic.”
Well, I guess I am nuts! Acute, working my way to chronic as I take a selfie, or two, or three every day of the week! And there is a budding nut in my family, as my granddaughter is slowly mastering the art – and that is what I consider it – of taking her own selfies.
Are you one as well? Do you take selfies and post them to social media? If yes, how often and if not, why not? What do you think of our Picture of the Day?
