The Red, Yellow And Orange Sky
My father built a cottage on a narrow strip of land and surrounded by a calm, blue ocean. He made our cottage with wood; brown, teak and heavy. The doors were painted red, the roof was white. On the roof, my father built a nest. It was a sturdy, wooden nest; a lookout, the perfect picnic spot. This was home. This is why I will forever love cottage style homes and want one for myself in the future if I was given the right location of course!
We often sat in the nest, watching the calmly breathing ocean. You could see the seagulls circling our cottage as we sat having our lunch out there.
There was nothing more beautiful than witnessing up close the sun slipping under the ocean at dusk. Have you ever seen the sky at dusk? Red, yellow and orange. They are unlike any other red or yellow or orange.
Our cottage home was bathed in these glorious colours every day. Then, one day, we got tired of our home. Bored of the sun and the blue, calm ocean, we went off to the city. We went to find a better home.
The city did not smell of fish. It smelled of coffee and chocolate in the morning and vegetable stews at lunch and the city was not calm, never! Rather, it was loud, noisy and busy. As exciting as this was, we eventually had to get replacement windows to keep the noise out of our home.
Thrilled were we with the city! We loved the city and all its sights. We watched plays and musicals in the theatre and circus performances. There were people of different skin colours and faces and people with red hair to see. A wonderful red it was but not as wonderful a red as the sky at dusk. We wore yellow summer dresses; an attractive yellow but not as attractively yellow as the sky at dusk.
We painted our new home a bright, fresh orange; a beautiful orange but not as beautifully orange as the sky at dusk.
We missed our home.
