Blood Is Not Thicker Than Water

Choosing Family

We have many folklore, proverbs and sayings in Jamaican on many topics but the one that is at the centre of today’s edition of our pictorial journey is “Blood,” or family.

Visit my Facebook page and watch my Live 5-minute conversation on blood and family at some point. For now though, the saying goes like this, “Blood thicker than water.”

A few years ago, an aunt of mine said that to me. I was very quick to disagree with her. See, my “blood” on my father’s side had basically abandoned me. They migrated from Jamaica to the United States soon after my his death in the 1980’s and I had no contact with them. That was until Facebook.

Blood Or Love

Through my Facebook profile, I met a cousin who resides in Australia. It was her who eventually put me in touch with another relative who lives in the United States. After 30-odd years, I was “re-connected,” with some of them.

bloodYou might wonder why I keep using the word “blood” and not family. Well, in my heart that is what is between my father’s side of the family and I – blood. The same cousin from Australia said a truism to me one day a couple or so years ago. “Blood makes us relatives but love makes us family.”

“When everything goes to hell, the people who stand by you without flinching — they are your family. ” Jim Butcher

She, like Jim Butcher, was spot on! Every one of you reading this can share an experience, maybe your own or that of another, of true family, those who you choose because they love you deeply and are there for you always.

  1. When everything goes to hell, the people who stand by you without flinching — they are your family – THIS IS SO TRUE ESP. WHEN YO LIVE ABROAD. In many cases te people you meet and get closer to can be even more of a support network tan family. They wake up in the wee hours to your call, they respond to your jokes, they cry and laugh with you…in most cases they become Family, without the blood ties.

And thank you for visiting Sarah!

  3. Yes! I have a few friends that are like sisters to me. We are not blood-related, but they have always been there for me. Heck, we are closer than most blood family.

I so get that! It is true of many of us – that we are closer to a few or couple friends than we are to family.
