What To Do When Trouble Comes

Those Pesky Challenges

trouble“Wen trouble tek yu pickney shut fit yu!” Trouble – that is what the Jamaican saying I am discussing with you in Tuesday Thought© today covers. It is one of my favourites as it so succinctly describes your state of mind when a life challenge feels more than you can bear.

Every Tuesday, I share a Jamaica proverb with you – did you catch last week’s? Preparing Tuesday Thought© earlier, it struck me that there was way more to this proverb. It is not uncommon to hear two people talking in Jamaica – one sharing an experience or trouble that have come upon him or her and what the options to solving it. The listener hearing this story responds: “Wen trouble tek yu pickney shut fit yu!” In English what they are saying is: “When a problem is so overwhelming for an adult, a child’s shirt will fit him (0r her).”

What the heck does a child’s shirt have to do with dealing with a broken heart, not being able to pay this month’s rent, the car breaking down and you have no money to repair it? These are some of the many trouble that can come upon you without warning.

You are welcome Stephanie! I have learned to really understand and love that word – “humility,” there is such strength in it. 🙂

  2. Such an amazing saying! I always think, when troubles come, that it humbles us. And there is no one more humble than a child!

  3. Somehow I find that when you allow your mind to go within, and Allow the inner child to come out, you find a solution to a challenge…Now while I am not advocating for adults becoming thumb sucking kids, many have forgotten how to be youthful and thus cant seem to find ease in solving said challenges. And Challenges are meant to be Precursors to Bigger better things…when we dont recognize that we miss the boat!
