Why You Should Take Care Of You First

It Is The Wise Thing To Do

careEvery week day morning, members of this community receive an email from me in which a motivational piece is shared with the intention of supporting them through the day. A large part of the reason for doing this is and very early in the morning is the recognition that you have to take care of yourself first. Whether that is the first thing in the morning or first in line.

Some of you might read that and think “selfishness ” is being promoted but you could not be any more wrong. One of my favourite analogies is the direction given just before a plane takes off. In the safety instructions, the airline staff tells you to put on the oxygen mask on yourself first. Basically take care of you before you attempt to help your fellow passengers or even the child sitting on your lap or next to you. Why? Well you cannot be of help to anyone if you are gasping for air, weakened and/or lifeless can you?

Intersecting Lives: Care Of Self

wisdomWeekday Wisdom© is emailed to Subscribers Monday through Friday and this week the focus of the motivational messages is “Intersecting Lives.” What that means is paying attention to the people with whom you share life experiences  and that includes strangers. An essential part and quite possibly the most important step is to take care of you first before stepping out each morning, entering a relationship or to be better prepared to meet and interact with the challenging people who you will meet throughout the day.

In keeping with this focus, today’s Tuesday Thought© highlights this Jamaica proverb: “Parson christen him own pickney first.” Translated from patois to English, the saying is: “A pastor christens his child first.” Watch this video for an explanation of the proverb and how it relates to the theme of intersecting lives and taking care of yourself:

  1. […] we close the month of March and our reflections on intimate relationships and the often less examined areas of them, this republishing of a post that I wrote a year ago is […]

  2. It is definitely not selfish to take care of yourself first. And I love that you point this out. When we are happier, those around us are. We enjoy more and appreciate more. It is a hard habit to break, as a Mom I tend to put the needs of my family first. But with age am now taking time to finally do what pleases me. Thank you for your insightful post.

Of course it is a hard habit to break but one that we must so that everyone will have a more fulfilling life. Thanks Lori for the visit. 🙂

  3. Though it is kinda obvious why we should take care of us first, sadly many women especially feel they need to be martyrs. Not too sure what they are trying to prove so please let me know when you find out. I am selfish, I believe that I need to take care of myself first because only then can I assist others – and that includes my family.

I will never find out – at least not from personal experience! LOL! I think though it is a matter of social programming linked to culture and the fact that men still rule the world. 🙁

  4. Very well said. Taking care of yourself first is not selfishness. It’s because of other people that we need to do this, so we can help and take care of them, too.

      Fully agree with you Esme!

  5. If you don’t take care of yourself, how can you take care of anyone else? It’s okay to be a bit selfish. You have to be selfish to be selfless!

Amen to that Gigi! Thanks for the visit and comment. 🙂
