Dear Santa: My 3 Christmas Wishes

As The Music Plays

christmasIt is that time of year again. Lists are getting long and commercials seem to be pushing every luxury and contraption you can imagine. I will not lie to you, I do have some of those doodads on my list but as the Christmas season nears, I find myself not only daydreaming about my expected presents but also about the other things that no one could buy me.

As I look back over the last year, I could not quite describe it as happy or sad or prosperous or exciting or painful. It was all of them. I learned so much about myself and what I really want. I also am learning that it is okay for me to want things, both material and otherwise. So as I sit here at my desk, Christmas music playing on Pandora and my little fluffy kitty snuggled on my lap, I will tell you three things I want this Christmas.

This Christmas, I Want…

The first I will share is a material good that it seems will grace everyone’s stockings this year. It is a fitness watch. No it is not the Fitbit, though I checked that one out too. It is the Polar A300 Fitness tracker. After spending a good half hour staring at a row of colorful watches and wristbands and reading about their features, I chose this one mainly because it measures activity, heart rate and calories burned and I tend to do a lot of activity that pedometers will not track. It is also water proof and will measure my activity if I get myself into a pool this winter (however unlikely that will be). I have already asked Santa for it, which, in my family, means that I sent a letter to my favorite aunt and labeled it “For Santa.” Don’t worry, she sends me the same thing.

christmasOn to the second thing. It is not something you can buy but it is something I whisper to God every year as I fall asleep. I need snow. It may seem silly, especially for those of you in the south but for me, it is not really Christmas without snow. I need to be able to pull on my boots, mittens and gloves and run out to make a snow angel or a giant snowman. I even have a kit.

I think the reason I must have snow is that I grew up in Minnesota and my twin and I were born only days before Christmas. I think we have only had three birthdays without snow, and they were spent in mourning. But, on the happy occasions that we had snow, our birthdays and holiday gatherings with our friends were spent ice skating, skiing or sledding. You guys can have Christmas in the sand, with palm trees swaying and even wearing red and green flip-flops but give me snow. If you have never experienced it, there is nothing more magical than waking on Christmas morning to a nice cup of gingerbread coffee as you watch snowflakes falling from the window behind your beautifully lit Christmas tree. It is the only frozen thing that will make you feel warm all over.

Christmas together

And my third Christmas wish is something I need to wait for until next year. It is a Christmas with my husband and kitty in our beautifully decorated house. He being from the United Arab Emirates, is not big on Christmas and will be flying back to the warm desert while I make my way home to Minnesota. I knew that this was how the holidays would be this year. Last year, we were in Dubai getting married so our first traditional Christmas together will have to wait. So the dream sits and waits in my imagination. It is such a fragile dream that the picture never really focuses and it feels like too much thought might scare it away. But if there was ever a season for hope, it is this one.

What’s On Your List?

So now, I will leave you to make your own plans as I daydream of my aunt’s glowing warm living room and her short little tree. I will get lost in the memories of watching silly holiday movies with her as she giggles in the background. And I will notice once more how much time changes my appreciation of Christmas. No longer am I all that concerned about the presents under the tree. All I want is to be around those I love that I see too little of and make more glowing, warm memories.

Yes, snow is definitely not in short supply here in Canada! I do hope you get your FitBit!

  13. The weather has been crazy in the last couple years. You never know…you may get that white Christmas!

    1. Ms Claudette

Anything is possible these days! 🙂

  14. My wishlist is to enjoy the day with no running around just snuggled on the couch watching movies. 🙂

  15. dltolley

‘Happy children’ tops my list this year. One is ill and two are unemployed. A trying year for our family. But we’ll get through it. Our record for surviving tough times is 100%!

    1. Ms Claudette

“Our record for surviving tough times is 100%” – that must be the best thing I have heard all day so far! I am standing in the gap for your family today Dianne!!! 🙂

  16. I genuinely dont wish for a WHITE Christmas but I know when I first came to Europe I dreamt about it…for all of two minutes till my first bum snow meet. Then I knew it isnt for me.

May all your Christmas wishes come true. How awesome would it be if your hubby surprised you Alexis? Amazing grace. Thanks Claudette for sharing this!

    1. Ms Claudette

It was my pleasure to share it! Alexis and all my Contributors have such wonderful stories and perspectives that I cannot but share! 🙂

  17. LoL I hope you get what you wish for!!! I’ve been so preoccupied with many things goin on the past few months that I never really think about it. I guess if I have to wish for is to be home on Christmas! It’s been many many years since I last celebrated Christmas back home 😉

    1. Ms Claudette

If you don’t mind our asking, where is home? Wherever Christmas finds you this year, hope that it will find you happy. Namaste. 🙂

  18. Being from Maine, I understand your need for a little bit of snow especially around the holidays. My birthday is in January so I totally get the nostalgia of it! lol

    1. Ms Claudette

Glad you appreciate Alexis’ sentiments re snow for Christmas! I have come to also appreciate seeing the snowfall on Christmas morning having lived in Canada for quite a bit now. Thanks for dropping by! 🙂

  19. My list is super boring… I need a big crockpot and I want an Apple Watch! Hope Santa gets you what you want!

    1. Ms Claudette

Well, we are boring together as I too have a crockpot on my list of three items! Not a big one though as I am single. 🙂

  20. Ah, snow! Being from Ohio, I have seen and felt more than my share of the white stuff…and feel it is highly over-rated and often bitterly cold. But Christmas Eve is the one time when I do like to see it.

    1. Ms Claudette

LOL! It does add something to the feeling of Christmas. However, I grew up in Jamaica and we had wonderful Christmases without snow so it really is about preferences. Thanks for dropping by! 🙂

  21. my unofficial christmas wish that has been shared with no one is my wish to find great man to date but i did also ask for a workout machine

  22. On my list? Being able to spend time with my kids and husband and not doing any work during Christmas

  23. my list includes my hubby hearing what he needs to hear from God.

  24. Elizabeth O.

Our wish list becomes shorter as we grow old, did you notice that? It seems like we carefully see the things that we need are already around us.

    1. Ms Claudette

Elizabeth, you are so absolutely right!!! I have three (material) items on my list and two of them are just jokes! If I get none of them, I will still be as happy as a lark!!! 🙂

    2. I agree. You come to realize that it’s not just about the material things as you go older. My only wish this Christmas is for my siblings to come home and spend the holidays with us. They’ve been away for too long.

      1. Ms Claudette

I will stand with you in the hope for a family reunion this year! 🙂

  25. my wish list is too big.. not sure if Santa can fulfill it lol

    1. Ms Claudette

Give him a try! LOL 🙂

  26. My Christmas wish is to be in Jamaica for the Christmas….I rarely spend Christmas outside of Jamaica and this year is one of them….

    1. Ms Claudette

Things happen, plans change but knowing you, you will put on one of your fabulous outfits and have a ball wherever you are – missing Jamaica or not. 🙂

      1. Yes Claudette that is the plan….moving right along

        1. Ms Claudette

          Moving right along! LOL

  27. Honestly the only thing on my wish list that I truly wanted was for my husband’s back to feel better, and after his steriod shots yesterday, it looks like it has! Huray!! If I were to have anything else, though I’m hoping for the Pebble Round Watch for Christmas!

    1. Ms Claudette

That is the best gift ever – one that you wish for someone else! You are amazing. Thanks for sharing that! 🙂

  28. I miss having snow so much! Before I moved to south Louisiana, I couldn’t have imagined missing snow, but I do :/

    1. Ms Claudette

You are not alone on that it would seem! Hope you will still enjoy Christmas to the max even without the snow. 🙂

  29. I just want a sunny beach and a hammock to lie in… Christmas in South Florida, gotta love it

    1. Ms Claudette

I spent a couple Christmas ago in Jamaica. After spending the last 10 prior to that in Canada – it was a bit different. I like Alexis kinda missed the snow. 🙂

  30. On my list is to have better health and to be with the ones that I love. I hope you get your traditional Christmas next year x

    1. Ms Claudette

Yes, I am joining you on that – wishing Alexis a lovely Christmas with those with who whom she will spend it this year. Thanks for dropping by Ana. 🙂

  31. On my list this Christmas is a pain free day so that I can enjoy time with my friends x

    1. Ms Claudette

I am standing in the gap for you with that – really want you to enjoy the day. Namaste

  32. My list is just spending time with family. And a box of chocolate.

    1. Ms Claudette

Both sounds extremely delightful! Have a wonderful time! 🙂

  33. Robin Rue (@massholemommy)

I have been wanting a fitness tracker, too. I asked for one for xmas.

    1. Ms Claudette
