101 Ways To Wellness: End Prescription Drug Problem

America’s Unwellness

Before anyone gets angry or peeved at me, let me quickly state that I am not picking on or pointing fingers at Americans. They are Canada’s neighbour to the South and they were and remain somewhat of  a “Big Brother,” to my country of birth, Jamaica.

The reason for highlighting America’s drug problem – prescription drug problem – in this post is simple. What has been happening and continues to occur among the US population when it comes to prescription medication can and will be replicated all over the world if it continues to go unchecked.

Further, the key to curbing and, hopefully, eliminating this prescription drug problem is a return to holistic health approaches and, I hate to use this hackneyed and much-maligned phrase – back to basics.

Pill Poppers

PoppingPills2Let me admit that, by the standards of fitness buffs all over, I am not fit. My physician(s) would also say that my physical wellness could be better being that diabetes, hyperthyroidism and anemia afflict me. In my estimation, given the way I feel on a daily basis – physically, mentally, spiritually – I am well. Taking only what is necessary by way of prescription drugs, I try my best to keep up my wellness.

My question is – do you or are you more of a pill popper? Check out this article that was published in Mind, Body, Green  couple years ago but still remains relevant and take part in this poll:

Now, the rest of us older folk can help our bodies by making a choice for greater wellness. “Preacher heal thyself,” you might be thinking since my list of ailments is non-too-short.

A large percentage, I would say 99% of what is written by me on this blog or elsewhere is related to my journey and steps that have been taken or are about to be taken.

Neither wanting to turn into a full-blown pill popper as the years progress or to make my transition before my granddaughter has achieved certain milestones, this next set of advice is very much of me as it is for you. We all are invited to pick five of these 101 tips each week and add five more to our routine each week.

So check out the list at Women’s Health, pick your five for the week – share them with me by leaving a comment below – and, if you are like me then you will need the next few days to ramp up. Let us agree to get off our butts come Sunday…agreed?

Actually, I am eyeing these five to start out with:

  1. Stop…drinking your calories.
  2. Eat cinnamon every day
  3. Calling in sick next Friday (LOL – that one might not fly but I will try)
  4. Increase my quota of iron-rich foods
  5. Start taking multivitamins

That seems like a doable list for me, except #3 might be a challenge!

Share your list with me, subscribe to this blog and be the first to know my updates and that of the other Contributors. We have a new woman coming on board soon – so stay tuned for that!

Check out Part IV of our short-story series, “The Unfortunate Life of An Interesting Woman,” and here’s an excerpt of Part V, coming tomorrow:

“Ginny had spent the rest of the evening retyping her pieces with her mother’s edits and she was truly amazed at how well they had turned out. The next morning, before her father left for work, Ginny thrust the pile of papers in front of him. With a chuckle, he grabbed them and began reading. His face changed as he read. He always loved reading Ginny’s work, but the articles he was reading now were much deeper and had more clarity than ever. The struggle that Ginny faced as a woman in their society leap from the page in such an emotive and expressive way that tears came to Ginny’s father’s eyes. “

Have a Well Tuesday and catch up tomorrow!

Namaste
